Character Marks: Naturally occurring marks in hardwoods, such as specks and/or burls that give wood its unique visual appearance and appeal. Heartwood: The wood extended from the center (pith) to the sapwood, the areas of which do not participate in the direct life and growth of the tree. These areas are usually darker in appearance than that of sapwood. Sapwood: The wood near the outside of the tree. It is usually lighter in color than that of the heartwood. Mineral Streak: Wood containing an accumulation and/or assortment of minerals introduced by sap flow, causing an unnatural color that can range from greenish brown to solid black. Splits: Separations in the wood fibres that run parallel to the grain of the hardwood. | ![]() | |
